Year 6 | Moreton Bay Boys' College

Task 1: Where we are in time and place

SURREALISM

Exquisite Corpse

Following the Art and Design cycle of inquiry, students were asked to develop a number of artworks inspired by the Surrealist Art movement. For this artwork, students collaborated to create an exquisite corpse, a game invented by artist Andre Breton and popularised by the Surrealist artists and writers in the 1920s. In small groups, each student created a section of the figure without knowing what the other students had drawn before them. At the end, the boys unfolded their artworks to reveal weird and wacky figures, demonstrating their creativity and spontaneity.

Surrealist Collage

Following the Art and Design cycle of inquiry, students were asked to develop a number of artworks inspired by the Surrealist Art movement. For this artwork, students created a digital collage inspired by Surrealism. They gathered images from both the world around them and the internet in order to create an interesting composition, with a clear focal point using the Principle of Design - Emphasis. In planning their Surrealist Collage, they were asked to create a composition that, looked real, however when the audience looked further at the artwork, resembled a landscape that was more like a dream.

Task 1: Exquisite Corpse

Task 2: Sharing the Planet

COLLABORATIVE ARTWORK

Students from both year six classes were asked to design and create a collaborative artwork that responded to the central idea ‘Challenges can empower us to address local and global problems’. They collaborated on all parts of the artwork, from the initial design process to the roles that each person played in the making process according to each person’s strengths. In groups, the students worked together on small artworks using a variety of mediums to visually illustrate their ideas and concepts. These works then informed discussion by both class groups which provided the plan of the final artwork design, processes and roles of each student.

By completing this task, students were able to identify, address and reflect on the challenges that came with a large-scale collaboration and create an artwork that showcased their primary years journey.
